Crochet Small Coin Bags with Granny Squares, Keychains for Sankranti Gift, Special Sankranti Series

 

December, the year ending and in new year's January we have one and only one festival in India which occurse on fixed date (others in fixed Marathi day that is TITHI) and this festival is Sankranti which occures on 14th January. Married women offer small gift to some marries women which is called VAAN. 

Last year I made many videos of amigurumi videos as Keychains for Sankranti. But then I realise that ladies avoid to make single crochet designs as they take more time. They want to complete orders for Sankranti. Hence this year I made most of the Sankranti gifts by double crochets which my subscribers like most. Hence in this series of posts, you will find very simple designs which my followers can make easily in a large numer like 30-40 for Sankranti Gift.

I made some small purses for this purpose means to give it as a gift to your friends. Some are very small which can be used as Keychain. So here I will post these coin bags in special Sankranti Series.

These two patterns can be made by any granny square. Here I explain those which are seen in above photo. For bigger size just work out 3-4 rounds more, the pattern will be same. 

TYPE 1: In above phot brown, white and red. Very Small Used as Keychain (only in 3 rounds): Any color or properly we can say use any left over yarn. This is best use of yarn pieces which generally we have in ample.

Pattern: Col 1: R1: In magic loop. (dc3, ch1) 4 times, cl.

Join color 2 at any ch1-sp, R2: [(dc3, ch2, dc3) shell in ch1-sp, ch1] 4 times, cl.

Join col 3 at any ch2-sp, R3: [shell on shell, ch1, dc3 in ch1-sp, ch1] 4 times, cl.

Make two pieces and sew 3 sides by sc. 

Join yarn at the mid of one part of the open side. Make chs 50 and sew other end at the same place from where we start to make chs. The beautiful keychain is made so quickly.

TYPE 2: This granny is different made in pink color (5 rounds only)

R1: In magic loop, [4dc puff, ch3 (one ch to fix puff then 2 more)] 8 times, cl. Sl st in ch2-sp.

R2: [(4dc-puff, ch2, 4dc-puff) shell in ch2-sp, ch1, dc3 in next ch2-sp, ch1] 4 times, cl.

Later on I realised that I should have made ch1 after shell and after every dc3 made (which I had not made in video) So I think you can make it.

R3: [shell in ch3-sp of shell, ch1, dc1 in ch1-sp, dc1 in all dc-sts, dc1 in next ch1-gap, ch1] 4 times, cl.

Repeat rounf 3 as many times as you want to get perfect square. I made only upto R4 and R5.

Then make 2 pieces and join 3 sides by scs. In the middle of open side make a loop of chs 50 for holding the bag or for attaching keys.

The beautiful bag is ready. It will look as in picture 1 above.

Crochet Kite for Sankranti Decoration / Bookmark

 Hello friends,

Sankranti festival is followed by Kite festival. So in Sankranti Kite is very important. Women (married) organizes "Haldi Kumkum" at their home on this occasion. They invite other married women apply Haldi kumkum, perfume and sprinkle rose water to them considering them as Goddess, then offer OTI (means wheat, and the peas, carrot pieces etc) and Tilgul requesting to keep the relations always sweet. Then offers some small gift. When I was young, generally the small things gifted were supporting the spirituality then slowly it is shifted to giving some small useful gifts just as I made crochet small bags, coin bags, keychains for offering gifts.

On the occassion of Haldi kumkum, women make beautiful decorations. These are some items I have crocheted for Sankranti decoration.

This year I made these Kites for Sankranti Decoration and after Sankranti you can use them as Bookmarks. In the next post, I will show my crochet tilgul and Halwa, Sankranti special dessert. 

Kite: Pattern:

I used 4ply yarn 1.75 mm hook

Height 3” width 2” weight 2 gm

With orange yarn make Chs 11+1 (Any number of odd chains).

R1: sc 1 in each ch starting from second (11)

R2: 2sctog, sc 1 in 7 sts, 2sctog, ch 1 turn. (9)

R3: 2sctog, sc 1 in 5 sts, 2sctog, ch 1 turn. (7)

R4: 2sctog, sc 1 in 3 sts, 2sctog, ch 1 turn. (5)

R5:  2sctog, sc 1 in 1 sts, 2sctog, ch 2 turn, (3)

R6: incomplete dc 1 in next 2 sts, YO pass through all sts on hook, BO.

Join green yarn at the first ch (out of 11 chs of starting).

R1: 2sctog, sc 1 in 7 sts, 2sctog, ch 1 turn. (9)

R2: sc 1 in each st, ch1 turn, (9)

 R3: 2sctog, sc 1 in 5 sts, 2sctog, ch 1 turn. (7)

R4: sc 1 in each st, ch1 turn, (7)

R5: 2sctog, sc 1 in 3 sts, 2sctog, ch 1 turn. (5)

R6: sc 1 in each st, ch1 turn, (5)

R7: 2sctog, sc 1 in 1 sts, 2sctog, ch 1 turn. (3)

R8: sc 1 in each st, ch2 turn, (3)

R9: 3dctog, BO

Border: Join jari yarn and make sc 1 in each st, at corner make sc 1 extra. At the top, make ch1-picot extra.

Keep the long end as in kite. Also fix small tassels as shown. Then have a beautiful embroidery as shown in fig 1.

Small Purse for Sankranti Gift / New Year Gift

Yesterday I made this small purse / pouch as a gift item. New year is about to come and after that our festival "Sankranti"will come;so this is gift item for these occassions.
Makar Sankranti (Sankranti) generaly occurse on 14th or 15th of January. This is the only Indian festival which occures on a fixed date because it is as per solar cycle, all other festivals are celebrated as per Lunar cycle hence their dates are not fixed. Sankranti is the  day of the transit of the SUN from tropic of Cancer to the tropic of Capricorn (Makar Rashi). From this day onward day time becomes longer and longer. Means Sankranti is dedicated to God SUN.

A very special sweet is made for this day, TILGUL. It is made of Sesame seeds (til)and Jaggery (gul) hence the name of the sweet til-gul. See fig 2. We also made sweet roti (soft flat bread like) stuffed by ground sesame and jaggery. See fig 3.

Ladies particularly married women meet together and give small gift to friends. Halavyache dagine (ornaments) are made for newly married girl or for newly born baby. About this I have already written in my previous post, please see,

So this is one of the reason that I made this small purse. It's dimensions are 5.5" x 4".

Pattern: Start with chains whose length is 8", if you want to make a purse with height 4". Fig 4. I have to make 36 chs.

R1: (RS) ch 3, dc 1 in each ch, in last ch dc 6, dc 1 in each ch on other side. Place markers at

 the first and the sixth sts in corner. Fig 5.(76 sts).

NOTE: Make every dc on right side inback loop or back part  of the stitch and on wrong side every dc in front part of the stitch.

 R2: (WS) Ch3, dc 1 in front loop (front part of v stitch) of each st till marker, dc 2 in each of the next 6 sts, dc 1 in each of the remaining sts. (82 sts) Fig 6.
R3: (RS) Ch3, dc 1 in each st till marker, (dc 2 in next, dc 1 in each of the next  st) repeat 6 times till other marker, dc 1 in each of the remaining sts. (88 sts). See fig7.

R4: Ch3, dc 1 in each st till marker, (dc 2 in next, dc 1 in each of the next 2 sts) repeat 6 times till other marker, dc 1 in each of the remaining sts. (94 sts)

R5:  Ch3, dc 1 in each st till marker, (dc 2 in next, dc 1 in each of the next 3 sts) repeat 6 times till other marker, dc 1 in each of the remaining sts. (100 sts)

R6:  Ch3, dc 1 in each st till marker, (dc 2 in next, dc 1 in each of the next 4 sts) repeat 6 times till other marker, dc 1 in each of the remaining sts. (106 sts). Bind off keeping 1 ft for sewing.Fig 8. 

 Sew lining as in fig 9. Fold as shown in fig 10 and sew the sides.

Now make a small hook (as per the diameter of the button) as in fig 11. I made 6 chs hook and sew the white button. The purse looks as in fig 12.

Handle: Instead of crochet handle here I made  handle with wooden beads just for a new style and it looks stylish as shown in fig 1.

Crochet Beautiful Black Draw String Bag 15 (Batawa)

Black Batawa Specially for Sankranti

One more creation is this Batava, specially black for Sankranti. I have written many things about this festival in my post,

One more thing about this festival is, in Maharashtra ladies wear black sarees on this occassion. Black colour has very much importance on this festival. Otherwise black is supposed to be in aspesious on other days by Hindus. Two reasons are given for the importance of black colour.
1. To fight with evil, darkness wear black
and other reason is more scientific,
2. This is the end of winter and beginning of spring so cold wave is on it's top hence to face cold wear black which is absorbant of heat and we feel warm.
So beautiful black sarees, paithanis with beautiful contrast borders are gifted to the newly married girl on her first Sankranti after marriage. See fig 2,3 and 4.

So if your daughter or daughter in law is newly married then you can make such Black and green or black and red batava for her as per the saree you purchased.
For this batava, I used 4 ply Vardhamaan black wool 50 gms and green 25 gms and 3.5 mm hook. We also need two beads, instead of that also you can make two small pom-pom.  It's size is, height 7" and diameter of base 5.5".

 Pattern:
R1: In a magic loop ch3, dc 11, close by slip st in third ch. (12 sts) ch 3turn,
R2: dc 1 in same st, dc 2 in each of the next st till end, close by sl st. (24 sts). ch 3 turn,
R3:dc 1 in same st, dc 1 in next, (dc 2 in next st, dc 1 in next) repeat till end, close by sl st, (36 sts), ch 3 turn, fig 5.
R4:dc 1 in same st, dc 1 in next, (dc 2 in next st, dc 1 in each of the next 2 sts) repeat till end,

close by sl st, (48 sts), ch 3 turn,fig 6.
R5:dc 1 in same st, dc 1 in next, (dc 2 in next st, dc 1 in each of the next 3 sts) repeat till end, close by sl st, (60 sts), ch 3 turn,
R6:dc 1 in same st, dc 1 in next, (dc 2 in next st, dc 1 in each of the next 4 sts) repeat till end, close by sl st, (72 sts), ch 3 turn, fig 5.5".
Measure the diameter, if it is 5.5 or as you want then stop the increase round, otherwise make one more increase round as (dc 2 in next st, dc 1 in each of the next 5 sts). Then the sts will be 84. But in my case I stopped after 6 rounds.
R7 to R9: ch 3, dc 1 in each st, close by sl st (72 sts). See fig 8.

 R10: ch 3, dc 1 in each of the next 6 sts, (ch 1, skip 1 st, dc 1 in each of the next 7 sts) repeat till last st remain, ch 1 skip that st, close by sl st.
After this round we can see, 1 window, 7 dcs. Fig 9.

 R11: ch 4 (3 as first dc and ch 1 for window) skip 1 st, dc 1 on each of the next 3 sts, [ (ch 1 skip 1 st dc 1 in next) 3 times, dc 1 in next 2 sts] repeat till end, (ch 1, skip 1 st, dc 1) one more time, ch 1 close by sl st,


That is in this row, there will be 3 windows, 3 dcs. Fig 10.
R12: ch 4 (as above), (skip 1 st, dc 1 in next, ch 1) repeat till end, skip  1st and close.
In this round we formed all windows. Fig 11. Then join green colour yarn.

R13: ch 3, dc a in gap, dc a on dc of previous row, {ch 2, (then we have to make flower with 5 peteals as shown in fig 13.) [YO insert in window number 1 in fig 13, YO take a long st(as long as dc)] 3 times, petal 1 made now [ YO insert in window number 2 in fig 13, YO take a long st(as long double dc)] repeat 3 times, petal 2 made, in widow 2, with long st double that of dc, ( fig 14), then [ YO insert in window number 3 in fig 13, YO take a long st(as long treble dc)] repeat 3 times, in widow 3, with long st treble that of dc, ( as in fig 13), petal 3 made, similarly make petal 4 in window number 4 and then petal 5 in window number 5 of fig 15.

 Now there are 31 sts on the hook, YO and pass through all of them, ch 1 and fix the flower, fig 16. Ch2, skip 1 window as in fig 13, dc 1 on dc of previous round, dc 1 in gap, dc 1 on previous round dc, see fig 17} repeat all over, close by sl st. Join black color.

R14: As round 10 (window 1 dcs 7) but this time window should be on the 3 green dcs of previous round, see fig 18.
If necessary go at the required space by slip st.
R15: as round 11.
R16: as round 12. Join green.
R17: as round 13.
New flower will be in between the two flowers of the round 13. See fig 19

R18 to R22: as R7 .
R23: as round 12.
R24 and R25: as R7.
Bind off.
Now for bottom border join green colour at some st after 6 round.

Border: ch 1 [sc 1 in 3 sts (starting from first st), 4ch-picot] repeat till end, bind off.

Make two cords of simply chains of length 20". Fig 22.

 Also make two tassels with green or black or both mix colours. I used both yarns for tassels.

Now thread one cord through the windows of round 23 when it is half the way thread a bead in that, thread the other part, tie the two ends of the cord and also tie tassel to that cord, it will look as fig 23.

Then thread other cord starting from the bead side, thread the bead in half way, complete as first cord.
Your beautiful bag is ready as shown in fig 1.
