Crochet Rakhi for Kids: Peppa Pig / Applique Peppa Pig

Hello friends, How are you? hope every one is happy with some hobby like crocheting, knitting etc. In the next month in India we have a festival "Rakshabandhan" about which I have already written in my post on 20 July 2020. Last year I made some Crochet Rakhi, some for elder once and some for kids. I made Doraemon, Chhata BHim and Bear Rakhis for kids. This year also same pattern. Here is one rakhi I made for kids. Kids always love cartoons. They feel cartoons as their family members or they call their family members by cartoon's name, for example my sister's grandson Advait, calls them as Peppa pig nani (nani means mother of mother). Thus they are so much attached with the cartoons, naturally they will love Cartoon rakhis always. Peppa pig is favorite cartoon of all kids, hence I made it. My non-Indian friends who don't celebrate Rakshabandhan may make this without belt and use it as an applique. You may sew it to any kid's dress. For this rakhi I used Vardhamaan Brilon yarn, it is thin yarn and hence I used 1.75 mm crochet hook. Final size of Peppa pig is 3.5 inches but if some one wants to make smaller one then just use 3 ply yarn and 1 mm hook. Pattern: FACE with pink, R1: In a magic loop work ch 1, sc6, close the loop but don’t close by sl st instead place marker at first st and work in spiral. R2: sc 2 in each st, (12 sts) R3: (sc1 in 1 st, sc 2 in next) 6 times, (18 sts) R4: (sc 1 in 2 sts, sc 2 in next) 6 times, (24 sts)
R5: (sc 1 in 3 sts, sc 2 in next) 6 times, (30 sts) Here onward we shall work only 9 sts row wise. Row6: sc 1 in 4 sts, sc2 in next, sc 1 in 3 sts, sl st next turn (10 sts)
R7: ch1, turn, skip first st, sl st in next, sc 1 in each st till 1 st to marker, skip that st, sl st in marker’s st. R8: ch1 turn, skip first st, sl st in next,
R9: ch1 turn, skip 1 st, sl st in next, sc 1 in each st till 1 sts to last st R10: ch1, turn, skip 1 st, sc 1 in each st till 1 st to last, sl st in last R11: same as R10 R12: ch1, turn skip 1 st sc1 in 2 sts, skip 1 st, sl st in next, bind off
R13: Make a border of sc 1 in each st around by different colour, At corner work 2 scs. Place first marker leaving 3 sts from where row wise work started, skip 6 sts and place other marker DRESS: Skip 3 sts from where we worked row wise place marker there then skip 6 sts place other marker.
R1: (RS) with red, sc 1 in each of the 8 sts (8 sts), ch1 turn, R2: sc2 in first and last st, sc 1 in between, ch 1 turn, (10 sts)
R3: same as R2 (12 sts) R4: same as R2, (14 sts) R5 R6 and R7: sc 1 in each st, ch 1 turn (14 sts)
By mistake I have 15 sts R8: (WS) sc 1 in each sts, sc 2 in last, (16 sts) R9: and R10: sc1 in each st BO Make border of sc by same colour to the dress. EAR: Skip 8 sts from where we worked dress and place marker for first ear then skip 1 st and then second ear.
Join face colour ch5, sc 1 in each st from second. Skip 1 st and join in next st repeat for another ear. Make a border of sc 1 in each st to both ears. BO.
LEGS: Skip 6 sts from corner, place marker, skip 4 sts, place other marker. With face colour make ch 6, sc 1 in each ch from second, BO keeping 4-5 inches yarn end.
SHOES: ch6, sc 1 in each of the 5 chs, sc 2 extra in last ch.
Make another leg similarly with ch5, shoe same as above. HAND: Make two pieces. From mouth side skip 4 sts and sew hand. ch 7, sl st in 3 chs (starting from second), ch4, sl st in 3 sts, join by sl st to the main 7ch, ch4, sl st 3, join by sl st, sl st in the remaining chs (out of starting 7 chs).
EYES: In a magic ring make ch1, sc6, cl BO. Make two. Work out some embroidery for mouth as shown. Then make chick with pink, same as eye. Lip: ch5, sl st 4, BO. Sew eyes and lip in proper place. After all sewing and finishing Peppa pig applique will look as,
First I made the chick red but then I thought that it is looking very hard, so then I made pink as in fig 1. For rakhi then I made belt, Make a puff, chs of 7" +3+3 then dc in 7th ch from hook. V made at end. Then make 3 to 4 rows with dcs 3 in each row, so as to cover the back portion of pig. Then 2dctog in first and third sts to form a V. Again make chs for 7" and puff at last. The following video with English subtitles may help you. ETC: Enjoy the Creativity.
