Crochet Toran , Door Hanging, Door Decor - Toran Patti Part 1

Hi,

Toran is a decorative door hanging usually seen in every house in India. Traditionally it is made of Merigold flowers and Mango leaves. The origin of torans can be traced to Puranas (Hindu mythological work). Torans are used to decorate the main entrance of the home. These torans are the first thing that welcomes guests. Just as in USA or UK we can see Wreath on every door, the idea behind both Toran and Wreath, is same to welcome guest. In India guests are always honored as God / Goddess. (Famous sentence for that is अतिथी देवो भव).

This beautiful Toran is made in 4 ply yarn with 3.5 mm hook.

Final measurements are: Length 37" and width 25".

Pattern: Make chs 21.

Crochet Flower Doily, Table Mat, Thalposh, Mandalam

Hello friends,

This doily / Table Mat I specially made for Sankranti Haldi kumkum. It's simple and the pattern is just to make a flower of five rounds and that's it.

Pattern:

Yarn 4 ply, Length 12.5” and weight 35 gm.

R1: Green: In a magic loop make (dc1, ch1) 6 times, cl.

Note that first dc means ch3, so here we start with ch4.

R2: Join magenta color. (dc1 ch1-space, ch1, fptr on dc of previous round, ch1) 6 times, cl.

R3: Join pink yarn at any ch1-sp before dc. Sc1 in ch1-sp,(fpdc1 around dc, ch2, fpdc1 around same dc), sc1 in ch1-sp, fpsc on fptr of previous round, sc 1 in next ch1-sp) 6 times, cl.

From back side it will be as,

R4: Join white yarn at any ch2-sp. [In ch2-sp (dc1, ch2, dc1, ch2, dc1), ch2] 6 times, cl.

From wrong side it will look as,

R5: Join green yarn at ch2-sp shown by red color, [dc5 in ch2-sp, ch3-picot, dc 5 in next ch2-sp, ch2, sc 1 in fpsc-st in third round (shown by bold), ch2] rep 6 times, cl.

One flower is ready.

Make only 5 petals of second flower and join picot of sixth with the complete flower. Similarly join third flower also in a row.

Then join forth at two places as in figure and then fifth at three places.

Also join two more flowers on other side.

The doily with 12.5” length  is ready.

If you want to make bigger doily, you have two options.

1.       Extend this by different designs and rounds or make 12 more flowers and join as shown.

This will be nearly 20-22 inches.

With black flowers in design, it is as we made. If you make 12 flowers more then join them as shown.

Hello friends,
This is another creation for Sankranti festival. I made this as a gift for my friends. It's very easy and can be completed in an hour.

Puff: (YO insert in magic loop, YO get 2 long sts) 3 times, (7 sts on hook), YO pass through 6 sts, YO pass through remaining 2 sts, ch1 to fix it.

Join pink in any space between two puffs.

R4: [dc 3 in each gap, (dc3, ch2, dc3) at corner means in ch2-sp of previous round] 4 times, cl.

Make one more piece like this.

Place WS on WS and sew 3 sides by R5.

R5: (sc 3 in ch2-sp, sc 1 in each st) combining both granny squares.

Now next round will be worked on open part only.

R8: sl st and get in gap, [(sc1, ch3-picot, sc1) in ch1-sp, skip one st, sc1 in next] rep till end, cl BO.

Make a cord by making chs with double thread. Pass it around, sew the bead and make knots to fix the bead.

If you want to decorate it more, sew a show button at centre and join Jari cord at dc st below pink border.

R9: sc 1 in each st around 3 sides of Batawa.

The beautiful batawa is ready.

Crochet Kite for Sankranti Decoration / Bookmark

 Hello friends,

Sankranti festival is followed by Kite festival. So in Sankranti Kite is very important. Women (married) organizes "Haldi Kumkum" at their home on this occasion. They invite other married women apply Haldi kumkum, perfume and sprinkle rose water to them considering them as Goddess, then offer OTI (means wheat, and the peas, carrot pieces etc) and Tilgul requesting to keep the relations always sweet. Then offers some small gift. When I was young, generally the small things gifted were supporting the spirituality then slowly it is shifted to giving some small useful gifts just as I made crochet small bags, coin bags, keychains for offering gifts.

On the occassion of Haldi kumkum, women make beautiful decorations. These are some items I have crocheted for Sankranti decoration.
