Crochet Durva for Ganeshji: Hariyali

 

Hello friends,

Here my new creation is Durva. Non Indian people may not know, what is Durva and what is it's importance. So for them,

Durva is a special type of grass which is used in all Hindu rituals. This grass is believed to have purifying effect and hence wear in Hom (Yadnya) etc. It is a powerful symbol of regenration, fertility and hence prosperity. Importance of Durva

Durva is cut with 3 leaves or 5 leaves and a bunch of such 21 Durva is used in Ganesh Puja. The question, why 21? is always in my mind. I asked many authorities but don't get satisfying answer. But just now I came to know that Ganeshji is the Captain in wars  and there are group of 20 warriers in each and one captain of them, such 20 groups and captain of them is Ganeshji. Hence je liked the number 21 or in order that people should remember this, it becomes a tradition to iffwe Ganeshji bunch of 21 Durvas or 21 Modaks. 

Actually every puja starts by worshiping Ganeshji. The prase "Shri Ganesh" signifies starting of new thing, some good thing, some positive thing.

I made crochet Bel for Shankarji, Jaswand flower for Ganeshji. So, many of my friends request me to make crochet durva, hence I made this.

I made it in two different types. After making Durva of type 1 (right corner Durva is type 1) I thought that it"s leaves comes out to more broad / thick than real one; so then I made type 2. I hope that they are very close to real one (left side Durva).

Pattern: 

Type 1 Durva: Chs 6, sl st 5 starting from second, 

chs 8, sl st 7, 

chs 11, sl st 10, sl st at the joint, chs 8, sl st 7, sl st at joint.

Type 2: Make a loop on 4 fingers, 

fold it, make ch1, sc5 on two threads of folded loop. BO with bigger yarn end. Then cut the loop from centre to get two leaves and third is the yarn end.

Lastly apply fevical to three leaves so that they will remain stiff.

Wow and this comes out to be very good.

Crochet Garland Type 4 - Sutputali, Vastr-mala, Necklace, Haar

Hello friends, 

This Maala, necklace or Haar or garland I made for a special purpose which I explain later but those who are not concern with this festival purpose, may make it as a necklace to wear as accessories. In 2 or 3 colours as per your choice and it will look marvelous.

The festival purpose which I mentioned above is .....

This year from 9th August according to Indian calender Shravan month will be starting, in which we have number of important festivals and Pujas, like Nagpanchami on 13th, Rakshabandhan on 22th and Krishn Janmashtami on 30th of this month and lastly Pola on 6th Sep. Next to that will be Bhadrapad in which we celebrate Haritalika, Ganesh Chaturthi and many more ahead. Read about, Nagpanchami ,

Hartalika / Teej , Ganesh Chaturthi .

For worship in all these festivals, a cotton garland is made as follows. It is also known as Sutputali or Vastra Maal (in Marathi which means cotton garland)

Material: Cotton, Turmeric, Kumkum and water.

Cotton is spread length wise (fig 1) then finger is deep in water and it is pressed as shown, getting it's look as bud / bubble and stem. Lastly the stems are coloured by termeric and kumkum alternatly.

I made crochet sutputali with yarn.

I have taken white, yellow and red yarns 4 ply and crochet hook 1.75 mm.

Final length 17" weight 6 gm.

Pattern: 

Tie all the three colours together make a knot tightly.

Now with yellow yarn make ch1, insert hook below white and red yarns 

and make sc 6 on those two yarns.

Then take white yarn on hook, pull yellow yarn tightly, ch5 with white yarn, tr 6 in first white ch,

 remove hook from loop, inseert in first tr-st, pass the working yarn through it so that yellow and red yarn should be inside that popcorn.

Now to cover red, yellow yarn at bottom side,

make ch4 and join by sl st at the bottom , again ch4 and join by sc at the top of popcorn. Thus a closed popcorn made.

Now join red yarn, pull  white yarn tightly, make sc 6 by red yarn on white and yellow yarns. 

Then again make closed popcorn with yellow and red yarns inside that then sc 6 by yellow and so on.

Repeat this till there are 11 closed popcorns, lastly sc 6 by red.

Sutputali or cotton garland is made.

Square Doily / Table mat / Ganapati Aasan 4

Hello friends, Here I made a square table mat. Particularly I made this as Ganapati Aasan (Rug to place Ganapati idol. But you can ofcourse use it as a table mat to put flower pot or make big one to cover square table or Chourang. I used 4 ply yarn and 3.5 mm hook. Pattern: Make a ring of ch4. R1:[ (dc3, ch2] 4 times, cl.

R2: sl st till next ch2-sp. [(dc3, ch2, dc3) shell at corner, ch2] 4 times, cl.

R3: sl st till next ch2-sp. [shell st corner, (ch2, dc3) in each ch2-spaces in between] 4 times, cl.

R4, R5 and R6: same as R3 or till it measures 6". (You may have more rounds if you want bigger)

While closing last round don’t make sl st but make ch1, hdc1 at the st where we have to join. Join white yarn in between the 3 dcs in ch2-sp before corner. Don’t cut pink yarn. R7: [sc1 in between first and second dcs, bead on second dc (out of 3 dcs), sc 1 in between second and third dcs, ch4] rep till end, sl.

R8: Get the pink loop on front side, which is on back side, [(dcs 3 in same gap, covering white four chains, ch2) rep till corner, shell at corner, ch2]rep till end, cl.

Leave pink yarn on back R9: Get white yarn on front side in between first and second dc, [sc1 in between first and second dc, bead on second dc, sc 1 in between second and third dc, ch4] rep till end, cl. R10: with pink, same as R8 R11: same as R9 with white. BO white yarn.

R12: With pink same as R8. R13: with pink same as R3. R14: same as R13.

Border: Bubble: ch3, make incomplete dc 3 in first ch,

YO pass through all sts, (half part of bubble made),

ch3, incomplete 3 dcs in first ch, YO pass through all sts,

join by sl st in the very first ch of first half part, also sl st at the beginning st of base,

sc 1 in second and third dc-st, sc 2 in the ch2-sp, sc 1 on first dc-st, then bubble here….

Rakhi:

Hello friends, Raksh-bandhan is one of the Indian festivals about which I have already written in my post on 20 July 2020. Here I made one more simple but cute rakhi. I use 4 ply yarn and 1.75 mm hook. Pattern: Start with yellow yarn. R1: In a magic loop make dc 24, cl.

Note that first dc means ch3. R2: sl st in 12 sts, ch1, bead1,

ch1 then again sl st in remaining 12 sts, BO.

Make such 5 petals.

Now fold each petal and sew them to each other as shown. Also sew bead at the centre.

For leaf with green yarn make same as R1 above. R2:sl st in 12 sts, ch3,

sl st in remaining 12 sts. Sew all these 2 leaves on two sides of flower. Then make cord of chains for 6 inches and lastly attach one bead at the end. The beautiful Rakhi is ready as in figure 1. Friendship Bands Simple:

Hi, Here are two more friendship bands which are very simple and can be made in just 10-15 minutes. Means it is eleventh hour ready handmade band. We are always too busy in our scheduled work and don't remember one day before that tomorrow is Friendship day. When our mobile reminds then in the morning we come to know that, ohh! if today is friendship day, what can I gift to my friends? So don't worry you can gift hand made beautiful bracelet / friendship band and your friend will be overwhelmed with joy. Such a simple and beautiful pattern these are!!! Blue Band: R1: ch4, dc 1 in first ch, (ch4, dc 1 in a st just like picot joining) repeat till required length (preferably odd number of loops. I made 15 loops.

R2:(dc6 in loop, join by sc1 in next loop) rep till end. (Note first dc means ch3).

When completed from both sides it will look as in fig 1. Watch the following video, with English subtitles, Yellow with Wooden beads:The wooden beads are very light weightand in bright colours. Pattern: R1: ch5, YO, insert bead, insert the hook in first ch, YO, get one st, get the st out through the bead, pass the st through one st on hook, now there are 2 sts on hook, tr in first ch (lower) that is YO twice insert in first ch, (YO passthrough 2 sts) 2 times, YO pass through 3 sts. ch1, sc 8 on one side, sc 8 on other side, cl by sl st with first sc-st. Again ch5, YO, thread the bead, insert in first ch, YO get one st and pass the st through the bead and one st on hook, YO twice insert in first ch, YO get a st out (5 sts), (YO pass through 2 sts) twice, YO pass through remaining 3 sts, ch1, sc 8 on one side, then 8 sc on other side covering the single thread on back.

Repeat this till the required length.
