Crochet Diwali Faral (Snacks): Part 1 - Plate and Karanji

Hi, Tomorrow is the main day of Diwali. For details about Diwali festival in India read, Apart from the Corona threat, people are trying to celebrate Diwali. Front yard of each home is decorated by big and beautiful colourful Rangoli. For Rangoli, you may read my post, Door hangings (Toran) of mango leaves and marigold flowers add to the beauty of the house. Diyas (mud lamps of oil) are lighting here and there as it is a festival of light. After the main ritual of Diwali that is Laxmi Pujan, people invite each other, enjoy lots of chating and offer "Diwali Faral Dish" to the guest which is tasty snacks as in fig 2.
Most popular items in this dish are, (Ladu, Shankarpale, Karanji) sweets and Chivada, Shev, specially and in Maharashtra state specially Chakali. For my friends who are out of India and don't know the snacks shown in fig 1, I am giving their names in next fig.
There are 7 ietms in the plate and the plate itself, so in all 8 crochet things we have to make. Out of which Karanji, I have already explained and given the pattern in my post on 3 Sep 2019. But for the proportionate Karanji to this plate and all other items, I make only 4 rounds (in original design there are 5 rounds) and then fold the round to get Karanji shape. So first we make that blue plate. Note that our first double crochet (dc) in any round will be of ch3. Pattern: R1: In a magic loop make dc12, cl by sl st in third ch. (12 sts) R2: dc2 in each st, cl (24 sts). R3: (dc1, dc2) rep, cl (36 sts). R4: (dc1 in 2 sts, dc2 in next) rep, cl (48 sts). R5: (dc1 in 3 sts, dc2 in next) rep, cl (60 sts). R6: Same as R5. (75 sts). R7: (dc1 in 4 sts, dc2 in next) rep, cl (90 sts). R8: (dc1 in 5 sts, dc2 in next) rep, cl (105 sts). R9: (dc1 in 6 sts, dc2 in next) rep, cl (120 sts). R10: (dc1 in 7 sts, dc2 in next) rep, cl (135 sts). R11: (dc1 in 8 sts, dc2 in next) rep, cl (150 sts). R12: and R13: ch1, sc 1 in each st, cl (150 sts) R14: Workthis round totally in back loop of stitches. (Skip 2 sts, dc8 in next st, skip 2 sts, join by sl st in next) rep.
If this round is not worked in back loop then it looks as yellow dish and when worked in back loop, it looks as blue dosh. If needed you can make some embroidery in the middle or on one side as shown.

Crochet Diya Stand (Hanging) Diwali Special Show-piece

Hello friends, I know that all my friends in India must be busy and tired by the extra work, in making Diwali Faral. To remove your foutigue here is one beautiful crochet creation, "Hanging Diya Stand". I remember that when I was in 5th or 6th grade, I learn one poem, I don't remember the whole one, but the one sentence I remember is "Thing of beauty is a joy for ever" and I am sure that this beautiful thing "Hanging Diya Stand" will make my friends joyful and relaxed. Material required: 4 ply yarn for making diya, white yarn for hanging stand, crochet hook 3.5 mm, one metallic ring with 3" diameter, 5 bangles with 1.5" diameter and beads medium size. First make 5 diyas as per the pattern in my post,
Then make wick to each diya. What is wick is explaied in my post, Wick: Join yellow yarn at the top of the diya, make ch3 and 3dctog. Make one more ch and then bind off.
Now wrap all the 5 bangles with white yarn by making single crochets (sc) all over, make chs 50, with 1 ft yarn end extra, cut the yarn.
Sew these 5 bangles to each other as shown in fig by 4-5 stitches.
I saw that after putting 5 diyas in that, it bents downward. So I take one more metallic ring of 3" diameter and wrap it by white yarn and sew it to those 5 bangles piece.
Now get the five one-ft yarn pieces left together and make chains 12 with three of them and join at base. Tie with remaining two pieces of yarn and cut the yarn.
Now sew string of beads with small pink pom-pom at the end, so that it will remain hanging. Five strings inside and five outside.
The beautiful hanging showpiece of five diyas is ready. The following video with English subtitles may help you.

Crochet Diya (Panati) Stand : Diwali Special Show Piece

Diwali fever is still there. So yesterday I made this Diya stand as a Diwali Special Show-Piece. As I have already written about the importance of Diya/ Lamp/ Light in the festival "DIWALI", keeping that in mind I made this stand of 6 diyas. It looks beautiful. Those Diyas are already made in last year Diwali. See my post, Material required for this stand: 4 ply yarn, 3.5 mm crochet hook, beads big and small, Metal ring with diameter 3" (which is used as bag handle), one wooden rod like pencil in height or may be wider than pencil (I have taken 8.5" long) and 6 bangles of diameter 1.5". Pattern: R1: Wrap the metallic ring by half doubl crochets (hdc), stitches should be multiple of 3, I have 66 sts by hdc.
Note: First doub;e crochet (dc) is always ch3. R2: (dc1, 2dctog) repeat, cl (44 sts).
R3: (2dctog) rep, cl (22 sts)
R4: As R2. (11 sts).
R5: ch1, sc 2 in first st, sc 1 in each, cl (12 sts) R6: ch1, sc1 in each st (12 sts)
R7: ch1, (sc1 in each of two sts, 2sctog) rep, cl, (9sts) R8: ch1, sc 1 in each st, cl (9sts)
Now insert the wooden rod in this 9ch-circle and see the fitting, if needed decrease one more st. Remove rod so that it will be easy to work, we shall insert it lastly.
Repeat round 8 as many times as needed to cover the wooden stick. Lastly pass the tapestry needle through all these 9 sts. Then make ch9 loop. Work sc 1, hdc2, dc 5, tr 3 in the loop, ch3-picot, tr3, dc 5, hdc 2, sc1. Then make a knot at bottom and bind off. Now cover 6 small bangles by single crochets (sc), cl. Sew two covered bangles to the rod 2" above the base in opposite direction then sew 2 more opposite to each other and perpendicular to the first pair at 2" high from the first pair.
Bottom Cover: R1: In a magic loop, dc 15, cl (15 sts) R2: dc2 in each st, cl (30 sts) R3: (dc2, dc 1) rep, cl (45 sts) Then You have to check the bottom / base of the ring, whether it is covered or not. When I check, I found that it is not covered but if I make dc round it will be bigger, hence I decided to make hdc round.
R4: hdc 1 in each st, cl (45 sts) Fill fiber in base and sew this cover to the bottom. I further decorate it by big beads at bottom. It also helps to support our diya stand.
Also decorate by sewing small beads on both sides of the leaf shape made at the top. Now keep 6 diyas made already. Wow the beautiful Diya stand is ready as a "Diwali Special Show-Piece". The following video with English subtitles may help you.

Crochet Door Hanging (Toran) Specially for Diwali (Part 2)

This is the beautiful lower part of that door hanging which is explained in this second part. Now its length is 41" and width 11". Weight is 260 gm (including beads with weight 80 gm. Pattern: In the main strip of door hanging (which we have seen in part 1, my last post), there are 188 sts. Now divide them in 4 parts, each of 47 sts and place markers. We shall make 4 semi circle pattern in these 4 spaces of 47 sts. Now in a dark colour yarn thread medium size beads 24 for each pattern, or total 96 beads for the whole. Mark the centre of one of the 47 sts, at forth st from this centre join yellow yarn.
R1: Remove central marker and make dc 10 in that st, join by sl st at the third st on other side from the central st, ch4, skip 3 sts, sc 1 in next. R2: ch1 turn, (tr1 in dc-st, ch1) 10 times, join by sc 1 in forth st.
From next row we work on right side only. Join dark colour at forth st from where the yellow st ends. R3: ch1, bead 1, ch1, (petal 1 on tr-st, ch1, bead 1, ch1) rep 10 times,ch1, bead 1, ch1, join by sl st at forth st on the strip. Here after we always work on right side.
R4: Join yellow yarn at forth st from the right working end. ch3, petal 1 in each gap, lastly skip 3 sts join by sl st, BO.
Again join dark colour at 4 th st on right side of first worked st. R5: ch3, (petal1, ch1, bead 1, ch1, petal 1) all in same ch3-sp, rep. till end, lastly ch3, skip 3 sts, join by sl st, BO.
R6: Join yellow yarn at 4th st on right of the first worked st of previous round.ch3, [petal 1 in ch3 gap of previous round (the gap which is in between two beads), ch3, petal 1] all in same gap, repeat till end, ch3, join at the 4th st by sl st, BO.
R7: Join same yarn again on right side, sc3 in each ch3-sp, at the end sl st in next st, BO. Make three more semicircles like this. Then you can decorate this either by big beads or by pom-pom. Because it's for Diwali, I am going to decorate it by sewing big beads after last round so that it will also remain stiff due to it's weight. Pom-pom: Take 5.5" card board, wrap yellow yarn 12 times and make pom-pom by fixing it with dark colour yarn. Also make dark colour pompom and fix it by yellow yarn. Sew pair of these two pom-poms at 5 places as shown in fig 1 on wrong side.
The beautiful door decor (door hanging) is ready for Diwali as in fig 1.. The following video with English subtitles may help you.

Crochet Door Hanging (Toran) Specially for Diwali (Part 1)

Heloo friends, how are you? Hope everything is fine in your life. As I have written in my last post about the big festival Diwali in India, so every one is busy in decorating our house in a new look. Hence I made this Door Hanging for my home. We call it Toran. Fig 1 and for close up see fig 2. For this I used two types of bead, 4 ply yarn in two colours (yellow and dark pink)and 3.5 mm crochet hook. In this post I will explain Toran patti - means the upper strip of the door hanging. Pattern: TORANPATTI: R1: With maroon colour, make ch4, dc 1 in first ch (loop made), ch5, incomplete tr 5 in first ch, YO pass through all 5 sts, (petal made) ch 3, dc 1 in a st just as (another loop made), repeat this, making one petal one loop, till the required length and last should be petal. I make 40" and for that there are 24 petals and 24 loops.
R2: Ch 6, turn, petal 1 in next loop, ch 6, petal 1 in same loop, ch6, petal 1 in next loop, ch6, petal 1 in same loop. Thus go on making petals 2 in each loop seperated by ch6. In case of last loop make 5 petals. Thus first 6-petals flower is ready. Go on making 2 petals seperated by ch6 in each loop from other side also.
R3: Join yellow yarn at any ch6 space. Make ch1, sc 7 in each ch-6 sp.
R4: Either make sl st till the 4th sc (out of 7 sc) or bind off. ch1, (tr1, ch1) 6 times in the 4th sc of next sp, ch1, join by sc1 in 4 th sc in next sp. Repeat this till edge of toran, make sc 1 in each of the 7 sts. Repeat this on other side also.
R5: sl st till second dc-st (out of 6), ch3, (ch2, dc 1 in next tr-st) 3 times, then (dc1, ch2) 4 times in second loop, at edge ch3, skip one tr, dc 1 on each 7 sc-st, ch3, skip first tr-st, dc1, in next, you can see how the edge looks, in next fig. repeat this on other side and other edge.
R6: Join dark colour at the first ch2-sp, dc3 in each of the three ch2-spaces, dc 1 at joint,at edge, dc 5 at corner's space, dc 4 in next ch3-sp, dc 1 in each of the 7 sc-sts, dc 4 in next ch3-sp, dc 5 in corner's sp. Work similarly on other side.
R7: (dc3 on 3 dc sts of first gap, 2dctog in next, dc 3 on 3 dcs of next gap, 2dctog) rep through out, thus decrease 2 sts in between 10 sts.
In second part, we shall see the remaining part of door hanging. For this part you can use this video with English subtitles.

Diwali Special Doily with Diyas, Thalposh, Mandalam

Hello friends, In India every one is busy in preparing for Diwali, the big festival here about which I have written on my 16th Oct 2019's post. It is a festival of light. Last year I made three types of lamps (which is called Panati). You can read my post on 16th, 17th and 19th Oct 2019, one of the link I am sharing here, So looking at the importance of panati (special type of mud lamps), this time I design the doily with Panatis on it. I used 4 ply yarn and 3.5 mm crochet hook. Pattern: Make a ring of ch5. Also note that whenever I write dcs in a round first dc is always ch3. R1: dc 18 in a ring, cl (18 sts)
R2: dc2 in each st, cl (36 sts)
R3: (dc2, dc1 in next 2 sts) 9 times, cl (48 sts)
R4: (dc2, dc1 in next 2 sts) 16 times, cl (64 sts)
R5: (dc2, dc 1 in each of next 3 sts) 16 times, cl (80 sts)
R6: (dc1 in 9 sts by blue, dc 1 in next by yellow) 8 times, cl (80 sts)
R7: (dc 1 in 9 sts by blue, dc3 in next by yellow) 8 times, cl (96 sts)
R8: [(dc3 in one st, dc1 in each of next 7 sts, dc3 in next) all by blue, 3dctog by yellow] 8 times, cl (112 sts)
R9: Join red yarn after yellow st, ch1, sc 1 in each of the next 6 sts, (sc 1 in next by blue, sc 1 in each of next 13 sts by red) rep 7 times, sc 1 in next by red, lastly sc 1 by blue in 7 sts, cl.
R10: with red yarn, sl st in each of the next 3 sts, turn, dc9 in yellow stitch, join by sc 1 in 3rd st, sl st in next 3 sts, turn, dc 2 in each of the 9 sts, bind off.
So we make all eight diyas seperately. Now join red yarn at 4th st after yellow st and make a new diya. R11: Join blue yarn at the st in between two diyas, dc7 in that st, [ch10, dc 7 in next st in between two diyas} rep, ch 10 join by sl st to the first dc (out of 7)
R12:(dc2, dc1, dc2, dc1, dc2, dc1, dc 2) on 7 dc-sts, dc 10 in ch10 space, (thus total 21 dcs) 8 times, cl (168 sts)
R13: dc 1 in each st, joining 4 base red sts of each diya. cl (168 sts) (that is dc17 and then next 4 dcs joining 4 red sts)
From next row we make border, it is 3 layered border which is very unique and beautiful Border R1: (sc1, ch5, skip 3 sts, sc1 in next, ch3 skip 1 st, sc1 in next) rep 24 times, cl.
R2: (dc 8 in ch5-sp, join by sc 1 in next ch3-sp) rep till end, cl.
R3: (sl st in first st (out of 8 dc-sts), sc1 in back loop of next st, [ch7, sc 1 in back loop of last but one (7th) dc-st, ch3, sc 1 in back loop of second dc-st in next loop] rep, lastly instead of ch3, make ch1 and hdc 1 in first st so that working st will be at centre, cl.
R4: (dc10 in ch7-space, join by sc 1 in ch3 sp) rep till end, cl.
R5: sl st in first dc-st (out of 10), [sc1 in back loop of second st, ch 9, join by sc1 in back loop of last but one st (out of 10 dc-sts), ch3] rep, again instead of last ch3 make ch1, hdc 1 in first st,
R6: (dc12 in ch9-sp, join by sc 1 in ch3 sp) rep, cl. BO.
